Bio

Emma Terama was born in Helsinki, Finland. She started school in LV, Nevada in 1985 and finished with an International Baccalaureate from Helsingin Suomalainen Yhteiskoulu in 1997. She enrolled in the University of Helsinki the same year and graduated with a M.Sc. in theoretical physics at the age of 22. During her Master’s she was an Erasmus scholar at Freie Universität, Berlin. From 2000 to 2007 she was affiliated with Helsinki University of Technology where she completed her dissertation in the field of Soft condensed matter with the thesis titled “Transport phenomena of polar biomolecules and colloids, perspectives through simulation”. She spent 3 months visiting at the UC Davis Chemical Engineering and Materials Science department in 2004. Her son was born in 2005. She received an Academy of Finland Researcher training and research abroad –grant in 2006 for a post-doctoral stay at IIASA - International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis.

Emma’s background being highly theoretical, her strengths remain within simulation and computational methods. However she has been an active UNICEF-volunteer and a chair-person of the Helsinki group for several years and thus gained insight about women’s and children’s rights, sustainable development issues in general and working with business partners. Her current interests include Projecting World Religions by Demographic Methods, A Historical Study on Surviving Offspring, Tertiary Education of the World: Will Women Overtake Men as the More Educated, as well as Land Use Change and Migration in Case Study Areas in Europe.
