Gapminder is an amazing data visualization tool. Its a huge leap in how data is represented and thus how stories are told. Large amounts of complex data are worth very little on their own to humans, but with advances like these information can be represented in human-friendly ways which results in quantum leaps of understanding, usability, and recall.
Rosling beautifully illuminates misconceived notions about the world backed up by United Nations data presented using Gapminder.
A GapCast converts statistical time series into moving graphics in ways that allows evidence based trends to be told as simple story lines. The time series used will be made freely available in the web service called Gapminder World that enable end users to further explore the underlying statistics in Trendalyzer graphics.
I highly suggest watching Hans Rosling's TedTalk where he shows off gapminder.

And his Previous 2006 TEDTalk - http://www.ted.com/talks/view/id/92
Both highly recommended!

Gapminder interesting..but not open
I really like the time based visualization that is being done with gapminder but in the last two years the underlying software hasn't been made more broadly available by Google which is disappointing.
What is the most important element of the software features to you?

Google Doc API
I was doing some related research today and ran across the APIs that Google has released in their docs.
Gapfinder type functionality seems to be one, see http://code.google.com/apis/visualization/
VisualEyes?

Are you familiar with the Many Eyes effort from IBM? See http://services.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/home

GApminder for data visualizaton
I was also disappointed that this tool has not been made more widely available.
The enthusiasm of the UN data presentation made me assume that this would ultimately come into the public sphere.
I am particularly interested in using it (or something like it) to present data from dynamic simulation models.
It would be a great tool for seeing "why things happen the way they do".
Is this availability going to happen?

Gapminder Functionality
Richard,
I think some of the gapminder functionality is in the api that Google released for charts. See http://performancing.com/tools/quick-look-google-charts
