A step towards commercial virtual worlds - Virtual Walt Disney World Added To Google Earth

Big commercial companies will continue to develop increasingly complex virtual environments to sell their products. Looks like Disney is already down that path. This kind of technology won't replace the physical world for a long time but it is a first step.

But some observers are suggesting that, in creating such a detailed online planning tool, Disney may be opening the door to virtual trips that take the place of the real thing. For instance, Andrew Smith of the Dallas Morning News wrote semi-seriously that, with the price of both air fare and gas rising so fast, "I think parents with gullible children should consider 'taking their kids to Disney World' by sitting them down in front of a monitor."

Andrew Frank a research director on the project said, "we're still "quite a ways from substituting a virtual vacation for a physical one."

He added that, while ads might become part of such an immersive online experience, companies will "have to make sure the experience doesn't end up feeling totally commercialized." Nevertheless, Frank said, 3-D may become an even more ubiquitous part of any real-estate-based promotion than it is now.

Abstract:

Big commercial companies will continue to develop increasingly complex virtual environments to sell their products. Looks like Disney is already down that path. This kind of technology won't replace the physical world for a long time but it is a first step.

Virtual Worlds...

Max:

Do you have any experience with Second Life? I'm curious what your thoughts might be given their large user base?

An interesting post on the relative size and difficulties of measurement of second life can be found at http://gigagamez.com/2007/01/04/second-life-the-recount-continues/

Second Life

I actually, maybe regrettably, haven't played Second Life very much. It's certainly a very cool platform and a very important thing to watch. For the most part I've cut video games out of my life, since I spent way too much time on them earlier in my life, and haven't played Second Life for the fear of enjoying it enough where it would take up a lot of my time. I should mess around in the world enough to have a better sense of it, call it....research.

What about the large user base were you asking? Is it an indicator of something important?

Larger User Base

Max,

I was just interested in if there have been "lessons learned" from corporations and universities who have established virtual presence in Second Life? Given the number of users, I was curious, if anyone was seeing a true return on investment for time spent creating content for this media?
